Navigating the Invisible: Reflections on Systemic Building Failures and Empowering Occupants

It is often the impromptu conversations in the hallways of conferences that spark the most profound realisations. That was the original seed for the Air Quality Matters podcast, and it holds true today. Following my time at the Indoor Air 2026 conference in Singapore, and after recent discussions with some of the brightest minds in our sector—including Lidia Morawska, Ranga Reddy Burri, and Ardeshir Mahdavi—I wanted to take a step back.

In our main episode this week, I pull together a personal reflection on ten distinct, yet deeply interconnected, takeaways from these conversations. It is a look at where our industry has been, the systemic friction we continue to face, and the colliding megatrends that will dictate the future of the built environment.

The Language Divide and the Cycle of Amnesia

If you spend enough years looking at the history of the built environment, you begin to see frustrating cycles. We are an industry that is notoriously slow to change, usually only pivoting when a crisis—like SARS or COVID-19—forces the invisible air we share onto the centre stage. But why do we consistently design for the crisis, only to operate for peacetime once the acute panic subsides?

The podcast explores how part of this recurring friction comes down to language. During the pandemic, we saw how a single word like "airborne" acted as a structural firewall between the medical community and building scientists. We spent months debating arbitrary droplet sizes rather than simply turning up ventilation rates. Bridging this linguistic divide is essential if we want to mount a pragmatic, mechanical response to future public health challenges.

The Cost of Perfect Control

For the better part of half a century, the dominant metric in our industry has been efficiency. It is easy to optimise for a spreadsheet; a utility bill is a hard, measurable cost. But in our relentless pursuit of thermal efficiency, we have often compromised the biological reality of the occupants.

In the episode, we unpack the flawed concept of the "average person." We spend billions trying to micromanage commercial floor plates to a static, precise 21 degrees Celsius, creating environments that ignore the robust, adaptive nature of human physiology. By designing for a statistical ghost, we effectively design for nobody. Are we, through our obsession with constant thermal neutrality, engineering our own fragility? It is a question that introduces a rarely discussed moral dimension to HVAC design and challenges us to rethink how much agency we give occupants over their environment.

Data, Megatrends, and the Looming Energy Squeeze

While we have seen a democratisation of data through affordable CO2 monitors, there is a growing risk that we are treating the proxy as the hazard itself, losing sight of fundamental principles like source control, ventilation, and filtration.

However, getting the basics right is about to become significantly more complicated. The built environment does not exist in a vacuum. In the full episode, we discuss the massive tectonic shifts currently reshaping our landscape: the AI revolution consuming global cooling capacity, the silent crisis of antimicrobial resistance, and the critical shortage of skilled trades required to actually install and maintain these systems.

Most pressingly, we discuss the looming global energy constraints. As grid operators look for ways to shed load, the temptation to repeat the mistakes of the 1970s energy crisis—sealing buildings tight and slashing ventilation rates—is sitting right in front of us. How we defend the invisible necessity of indoor air quality in the face of these pressures is the defining challenge of our time.


One Take: Overheating Schools and the Power of Behavioural Adaptation

In this week's One Take episode, we shift focus from global megatrends to a highly specific, immediate challenge: overheating in our schools.

We look at a recent paper from the University of Southampton examining a pre-heatwave intervention in UK classrooms. Around 40% of the UK’s school building stock consists of lightweight, heavily glazed structures from the 1960s and 70s. They were built with low thermal mass and are entirely unequipped for modern 30-degree summers.

A critical dynamic in these spaces is that young children naturally prefer temperatures a few degrees cooler than adults. Yet, it is the teachers who control the environment. Younger students, particularly those in Key Stage One, simply lack the agency to adjust their surroundings when they begin to overheat, leading to plummeting cognitive performance.

The episode breaks down a low-cost, creative intervention designed by researchers: a storybook called The Hottest Day at School. By modelling simple cooling behaviours through historical characters, the study aimed to see if education could empower kids to take action. The results demonstrate a profound shift in the children's willingness to seek shade, use fans, and drink water.

While we must continue to advocate for the billions of pounds required to properly retrofit these aging assets with mechanical ventilation and external shading, those structural changes will take years. In the interim, this study serves as a powerful reminder that behavioral adaptation and education are indispensable tools in managing indoor environmental quality.
