Rethinking the Green Building Movement and more with David Gottfried

The idea that buildings can be designed and operated to meaningfully reduce environmental impact is now a given in our sector. But 35 years ago, when the green building movement first began, developers viewed sustainability as an expensive hurdle that would inevitably slow projects down.

In the latest episode of the Air Quality Matters podcast, I sit down with David Gottfried , a pioneer who helped shape the global green building movement. As the co-founder of the US Green Building Council (USGBC) and founder of the World Green Building Council (WGBC), David has spent decades driving a trillion-dollar industry across 85 countries. Yet, despite this monumental success, his perspective on our current trajectory is sobering.

If the pandemic underscored one reality for the built environment, it is that ventilation in confined, densely occupied spaces is a non-negotiable requirement for public health.

In this week's One Take episode, I break down a recent paper from Railway Engineering Science titled "Study on air quality improvements in train compartments by coordinating exhaust of multiple air outlets."

Ventilating a high-speed train carriage requires balancing the thermal comfort of 100 passengers against the rapid extraction of CO2, VOCs, and respiratory aerosols, all while minimising energy draw. Most modern trains supply fresh air from the ceiling and exhaust stale air near the floor. This study uses computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling to demonstrate why this standard approach is flawed.
